Understanding Factors Associated with Commuter Rail Ridership: A Demand Elasticity Study of the GO Transit Rail Network

نویسندگان

چکیده

Planners have theorized that transitioning commuter rail systems to regional networks will increase ridership, balance mode share, and reduce automobile use in North American cities. This process is currently underway Ontario, Canada, as service being expanded throughout the GO Transit network. Calculating elasticities a common approach used identify factors that, if adapted, may significantly influence transit demand. However, few studies focused on identifying demand specific current case of upgrading context. The purpose this study fill gap. Station-level ridership data were compiled for system from January 2016 December 2019. Smartcard estimate station catchment areas which land use, socioeconomic, demographic datasets developed. Data about additional related access, quantity, fare price, availability substitute transport modes also compiled. Controlling trip type (e.g., a.m. peak evening off-peak), models estimated using random effect panel estimator. finds population density, fuel unemployment rate associated with regardless examined. Employment density seasonal variation significant, although different signs shown between models. results suggest plans kind transition should include other considerations addition quantity improvements. Those directed toward implementation transit-oriented developments, pricing schemes, competitive price strategies are outlined.

Load Quantification for Light Rail, Heavy Rail, and Commuter Rail Transit Infrastructure

The type and magnitude of loads passing through the track superstructure have a great impact on both the design and the performance of concrete sleepers and fastening systems. To date, the majority of North American research focusing on quantifying rail infrastructure loading conditions has been conducted on heavy-haul freight railroads. However, the results and recommendations from these studi...

Exploring Comparative Ridership Drivers of Bus Rapid Transit and Light Rail Transit Routes

A major research gap is the relative ridership performance of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT), and streetcar (SC). This paper assesses ridership influences of 101 routes in Australia, Europe, and North America using multiple regression examining the influence of transit mode, vehicle capacity, service level, employment/residential density, car ownership, speed, stop spacing, r...

Price Elasticity of Demand in the High Speed Rail Lines

Reduced travel time, regional cohesion, economic development and environmental benefits were some of the reasons given to develop the High Speed network in Spain, the largest in Europe. Ever since the opening of the first High Speed line in 1992, High Speed Rail (HSR) have become a new travelling experience despite the fact that in the recent years several voices have raised concerns over a lac...

Demand-oriented timetable design for urban rail transit under stochastic demand

In the context of public transportation system, improving the service quality and robustness through minimizing the average passengers waiting time is a real challenge. This study provides robust stochastic programming models for train timetabling problem in urban rail transit systems. The objective is minimization of the weighted summation of the expected cost of passenger waiting time, its va...

Evaluating Rail Transit Criticism

This report evaluates criticism of rail transit systems. It examines claims that rail transit is ineffective at increasing public transit ridership and improving transportation system performance, that rail transit investments are not cost effective, and that transit is an outdated form of transportation. It finds that critics often misrepresent issues and use biased and inaccurate analysis. Th...
